Where we are based

Why we are based in Gabrovo — and why your company should be too

Bulgaria is the country. Gabrovo is the city. A manufacturing hub since 1882, a UNESCO Creative City, home to three industrial zones and a technical university that has been training engineers since 1964. We chose it because it offers everything a foreign company needs to operate inside the EU — space, talent, infrastructure — at costs that Sofia and Plovdiv no longer match.

  • 170+ companies across three industrial zones
  • 1964 Technical University of Gabrovo, est.
  • −30% operating costs vs Sofia
  • 80 km to GWM's Lovech EV assembly plant

The city

The Bulgarian Manchester, reinvented

Gabrovo earned the name "Bulgarian Manchester" in the late nineteenth century. The first factory opened in 1882. By 1900, more than twenty per cent of Bulgaria's entire industrial output was concentrated here — textiles, metalworking, woodworking, precision instruments.

That heritage never left. Today, fifty per cent of the city's workforce is employed in manufacturing. The Technical University of Gabrovo, established in 1964, keeps the engineering pipeline running. And in 2017, UNESCO designated Gabrovo a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art — recognition that the craftsmanship tradition that built the city's industrial base is still alive.

What changed is the context. Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007, the Schengen area in 2025 and the eurozone in 2026. A company registered in Gabrovo now has the same single-market standing as one registered in Munich or Rotterdam — at a fraction of the cost.

What this means for you, in one sentence

A city that has been making things for a hundred and forty years, inside an EU member state that adopted the euro this year. That is the combination.

Industrial zones

Three zones, 170+ companies, space available

Gabrovo has three established industrial zones with existing infrastructure, road access and utilities. They are working zones with companies already operating — not greenfield plots waiting for a masterplan.

North Industrial Zone

~3,350 decares (~335 hectares) size ~100 companies

The largest of the three zones. Flat terrain, rail service with deviations to most sites, wastewater treatment plant, thermal power plant. Crossed by the Gabrovo–Veliko Tarnovo highway and bordered by the Veliko Tarnovo–Sevlievo by-road. Industries include machine-building, power engineering, chemicals, textiles, electronics and high technology. Approximately 555 decares of undeveloped land available.

Southern Industrial Zone

260 decares (~26 hectares) size 50+ companies

Compact, flat terrain with an existing land division plan. Approximately 70 decares of undeveloped exploitable area. Road network, water supply and drainage systems are in place with capacity for further development.

Western Industrial Zone

~200 decares occupied + ~200 available size 22 companies

Located along the Gabrovo–Sevlievo highway, connecting directly to the corridor that runs to Lovech and the GWM plant. Water, electricity and road access built. An additional 200 decares of suitable land is available and designated for industrial park development.

The corridor

Gabrovo sits in the middle of Bulgaria's industrial belt

Gabrovo is not an isolated city. It is part of an industrial corridor that runs through central Bulgaria — from Sevlievo (30 km west) through Gabrovo to Veliko Tarnovo (60 km north), with Lovech (80 km northwest) and Plovdiv (150 km south) anchoring the wider region.

This corridor is where the investment is going. Great Wall Motor is restarting production at its Lovech plant — 80 km from Gabrovo — with the ORA electric vehicle line expected to begin assembly in late 2026. A Chinese transformer manufacturer is already operating in Sevlievo, 30 km away. ZS Europe, a subsidiary of Shanghai Unison Aluminium Products, has invested €16 million in two factories near Plovdiv producing aluminium automotive parts.

For a manufacturer that needs to be near suppliers, near qualified labour and near transport infrastructure without paying Sofia prices, this corridor is the practical answer.

Destination Distance Time
Sevlievo (Chinese transformer factory) 30 km 30 min drive
Veliko Tarnovo 60 km 45 min drive
Lovech (GWM plant) 80 km 1 hr drive
Plovdiv (ZS Europe factories) 150 km 1.5 hr drive
Sofia (capital, airport) 220 km 2.5 hr drive
Kapitan Andreevo (Turkish border) 310 km 3.5 hr drive
Istanbul ~600 km 6 hr drive

Workforce

Sixty years of engineering graduates

For a foreign company setting up a manufacturing or assembly operation, the talent pipeline is local — graduates produced every year, in the same city as the industrial zones where they will work.

The Technical University of Gabrovo was founded in 1964 — established specifically to serve the manufacturing base of central Bulgaria. It has been training electrical, mechanical and precision engineers for six decades.

The university operates three faculties: the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Electronics, the Faculty of Mechanical and Precision Engineering, and the Faculty of Economics. It holds accreditation from the European Federation of National Engineering Associations (FEANI) and the International Society for Engineering Education (IGIP), and it carries ISO 9001 certification. Approximately 8,000 students are enrolled.

Engineering salaries in Gabrovo run well below Sofia rates. A mid-level manufacturing engineer outside Sofia earns significantly less than the €1,800–€2,800 that a software developer earns in the capital. For companies used to Western European labour costs, the difference is not incremental — it is structural.

Cost advantage

Thirty per cent below Sofia, and Sofia is already cheap

Bulgaria is the lowest-cost EU member state. Gabrovo is lower still. When we say operating costs run 60–70% below Western Europe, we are quoting the national average — in Gabrovo, the numbers are sharper.

A one-bedroom apartment in the city centre rents for approximately €310 per month. Outside the centre, approximately €240. For context, the same apartment in Sofia costs €450–€650. Plovdiv sits in between at €230–€410. Industrial and warehouse rents follow the same pattern — Gabrovo's rates are consistently below those of the larger cities.

For a company that has already decided on Bulgaria, the question is which city. Gabrovo offers the industrial infrastructure of a manufacturing hub without the rent inflation of the capital or the growing congestion of Plovdiv.

Item Gabrovo Sofia
1-bed apartment, centre (monthly) ~€310 €450–650
1-bed apartment, outside centre (monthly) ~€240 ~€350
Average monthly net salary ~€914 ~€1,730
Utilities, 2-person apartment (monthly) ~€161 ~€190
Broadband, 50+ Mbps (monthly) ~€22 ~€12
Budget restaurant meal ~€8 ~€10

Location and access

Central Bulgaria, connected in every direction

Gabrovo sits in central Bulgaria, on the northern slope of the Balkan Mountains. It is not a border town and it is not a capital — it is in the middle of the country, equidistant from most of the places that matter.

Sofia & Plovdiv airports

Sofia Airport is 2.5 hours by road, with direct flights to Vienna, Frankfurt, London and most major European cities. Plovdiv Airport is 1.5 hours south.

Türkiye and the south

The Kapitan Andreevo border crossing — the busiest land crossing between the EU and Türkiye — is 3.5 hours south. Istanbul is roughly six hours by truck.

North and the coast

Danube crossings into Romania are accessible via Veliko Tarnovo and Ruse. The Black Sea ports of Varna and Burgas are each three to four hours east.

Our presence

We are here, and that is the difference

setupcompany.eu is based in Gabrovo. Our network of lawyers, accountants, industrial agents and government contacts is here. When we say we help you set up your EU company, we mean we do it from the same city where your operation will run.

We know the industrial zone managers. We know the landlords. We know which buildings have three-phase power and which do not. We know the Technical University's career office and we know the local employment agency. This is not remote facilitation from Sofia — it is on-the-ground support from the place where the work happens.

Gabrovo is home, and it is where we believe the next wave of EU-bound Asian and Turkish investment will land.
